For halter showing, is it okay to have a plain background?
I think it's kind of weird that at live shows dioramas are rare, yet nifty but not needed in halter, and everyone in photo shows has a background in halter (Performance is different. THere you want a background...)
I'm just wondering, let me know.

Plain backgrounds are perfectly fine. I know a couple people who don't have access to picture backgrounds, so they have a blue piece of posterboard and sand footing. It ends up looking really nice IMO. I do that for my Trad size models, since I don't have a picture big enough to put behind them. Either way is fine. A nicely used picture may help if your horse is tied with another horse in all other respects, but a poorly used background can also hurt in the same situation.

Ooh! That's easy enough, I have a nice sky colored poster board I can use! The sand will be harder, but I'll figure it out...

Coffee grounds work too, if you like darker colored dirt.

I'm going to need to just use something 'dirt-like' for now, my mother would NEVER let me have sand in the house. The horses I'm thinking of are only SM sized anyway, a good photo shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of.

Hi! I am one of those people who *loves* a plain background I picked up a couple of pieces of "fake grass" (for want of a better word) at a local hobby shop. It looks good for my SM, LB, and MM sized models, and even larger. Here's some examples. Or just plain green "foam" like the background works well, too. Hope this helps
