Well for those of you who are just starting out (Like Me!), this site is EXTREMELY helpful! Now while attempting to learn color genetics, I can use this site until I know, and to double check what I believe! www.animalgenetics.us/CCalculator1.aspSo I have "attempted" to pedigree my first model!! So here is the horse: MRF For Pete Sake Here is the sire: www.saintpatscat.com/index.htmHere is the dam: www.northernhorse.com/doublecqh/dispersaldetails.asp?SalebarnID=35So will that work? The site says there is a 75% the foal will be a chestnut tobiano, and the sire has a few chestnut tobiano foals, so I am pretty sure it works! Also, I haven't figured out the age for MRF For Pete Sake, but how do you determine if it would work? Is 5 years on both mare and stally + the age of the model, and if that equals the mare or stallys age or less it works? I hope that makes sense LOL!

Oh cute model! As far as his pattern goes, if you look closely you'll see he's actually a tovero (tobiano + overo). He's got some tobiano characteristics -white legs, white over the topline, smooth edges to the spots. But he's also got overo characteristics -blue eye, oddly shaped facial white, white on his lower lip/chin, solid tail and white on the belly. So the sire is okay, but you'd need a dam with either an overo pattern or a tovero pattern. As far as age goes, most people say the sire/dam have to be 3 years older than the foal, but I've also seen people that allow the stallion to be 2 years older than the foal. A good rule of thumb is just 3 years older than the horse you want to be their foal.

oh thanks! i saw someone with him in a show and they had him as a tobiano, so i guess i shouldnt go by what other people say right thanks a bunch! 3 years? thats it!?! wouldnt that mean the mother would have to get pregrant around 2ish?

It is possible, though not frequently done in horses (though I do know an operation out here that does it) but since the years a real mare can have foals are limited, people usually allow a bit more leniency for models and say the dam only has to be 3 years older than the foal. Also, if you want something even more startling, cattle people breed their heifers the first time they come into season -usually about 1 year of age, so they're calving for the first time at two. They take into account that the heifer is still growing herself as well as feeding a baby, so feed her properly and there aren't really any side effects. Other than us putting human terms onto horses, as long as you feed the horse properly there really isn't anything "wrong" with breeding a two-year old. That said, I personally wouldn't breed a horse unless it had proven itself to be good enough that it would enhance the breed by passing on it's genes, which they can't do by age two. I hope that's a bit clearer, please ask if you've got any other questions. I love this kind of stuff. ;D

If you have any questions about pedigree assignment I'd be more than happy to answer them for you! Or, alternatively, I know some of our members have their own lists of sires and dams (S/D lists) where you can pick parents for your horses. My list is on my webpage and Diamond S Ranch also has a nice list.

A good link to go to for more help is ftp.apci.net/~alzahraa/pa.htm but that is with Arabians, (im sure it will work with any breeds) And also www.ipabra.org/index.phpI also have a lot of Stallions and mares. My site right now is shamrock-stable.tripod.com/index.html . I don't have many on there but I have all my horses in a Microsoft Word document if you want me to email you a copy, or i can snail mail a copy to you. Just ask and you shall receive! Hope this helps!
